Crawley were downed 1-0 at Meadow Lane thanks to a first half header from ex-Red Jimmy Spencer and Gregory admitted that he’s looking to see who’s worthy of a new deal for next season.

“It told me a lot about the players today,” Gregory confessed. “I’ve got to review contracts this week and I should have done it on Saturday or Sunday because I was in a much better mood.

“We need to build for next season. Once we make ourselves safe in this league I have to look at everyone and decide on who I want to go to war with next season, who’s going to roll their sleeves up, wear the shirt with pride and give blood.”

On defeat to the Magpies, ending Reds’ three-game winning run, former Aston Villa manager Gregory was disappointed with the first half display in particular.

“It will need to be a lot better than that next season,” Gregory said. “The first 45 minutes was similar to the Oldham game (away) and at half-time we decided to turn up but it was too late. It was an excellent performance against Leyton Orient, not so good today – I was very disappointed with the first half performance.

And he added:“Had the players gone about playing against teams in the lower half of the table like they had against teams in the top half then Richie Barker would still be here.”
