He said: “We have perhaps not got the budgets we have done in the last few years which have got the club where it’s got to.

“I am confident we will have a competitive, young squad hungry for success and my ambition for this season is to get the club as high up that table as possible and for me it’s the play-offs where we have to play for at least.

“We hear about fees and wages people are paying. I am a realist. I deal with what I can affect, what I can influence. There’s no point in wishing we can do things we can’t do. I will try to be as honest as I can with you.

“I’m a professional person, Jimmy’s (Dack) the same, we have not come here just for a job and because it’s a route back into football.

“If we were like that we would be out in six months. That’s not what we are about. We are grafters, we are workers. We’ll make every use of the money we have got to make it the best team we can and provide the best back-up support team for the team out there.

“No disrespect to what’s gone on before, from speaking to the players I am aiming to make this club just a little bit more professional.

“This club’s only been in the Football League for four years and because they got straight into League 1, people tend to forget that. There are things we want to improve all the time as well and as quickly as we can.”
