Reds went 2-0 down in the first half through goals by Myles Weston and Joe Pigott with Southend firmly in charge.

It was different after the break as Lewis Young injected pace when he came on at the start of the second half.

Reds created a series of chances but the only goal to go in was a third by Southend, again by Pigott with three minutes to go.

Yates said: “I thought even the first half we did OK, bar the two goals that we conceded.

“I was really pleased for the boys that the crowd stuck with them. I think they appreciated how much we put in.

“Every mistake we make we get punished and we are working tirelssly to put them right.

“I thought we showed some good, positive signs in the second half.

“We must take the positives out of it. That win will not be long in coming if we play like we did in the second half.

“It wasn’t by design we sat back, we did press at times. They (Southend) play a diamond midfield and the full-backs pushed on, and they do it well.

“Once we got Lewis Young and Shamir Fenelon on the pitch we showed some dynamism and we looked a real threat.

“Gwion Edwards has had six or eight shots and last Tuesday night they were going in - today it was not quite going for us.

“Hopefully if we can play like we did in the second half we can give the crowd something to cheer about.”
