Paul Connolly suspended for five matches

An independent regulatory commission made the decision against the Reds player at a hearing yesterday (Tuesday).

The suspension was as a result of a charge of violent conduct made for the FA for Connolly’s involvement in an incident with a fan last Tuesday in the 90th minute of their match at Brentford.

It was not seen by match officials but was captured on video.

The FA claimed the standard punishment of a three-match suspension would be clearly insufficient given the nature of the offence.

Connolly accepted the charge but denied the standard punishment was clearly insufficient.

The ban began immediately with last night’s game against Tranmere Rovers.

An FA spokesman said: “He has the right to appeal against the suspension.”
