Jamie Proctor’s 14th minute goal finally broke the deadlock after 178 minutes play over the three matches.

They did not look likely to score again during the second half.

However they still held the lead until Bristol equalised with eight minutes to go before finally adding a 91st minute winner.

Gregory said: “We didn’t play as well in the second half as we had in the first. Credit to Bristol - they deserved to win in and we didn’t.

“The Bristol Rovers goalkeeper had nothing to do in the second half which summed up our performance. The players feel they let the fans down.

“This tie has been a nightmare. It’s taken four attempts to play it and it’s been very difficult. We’ve had a good rest so there’s no excuse from a fitness point of view.”
