Is the Wolves win Crawley Town’s best ever result?

The Reds skipper is well equipped to judge, having played in a number of massive wins since joining the club in the Conference a little over three years ago.

Debate has raged as to which result can lay claim to being Crawley’s best ever - there are a number of strong contenders in recent years.

Last season under Richie Barker in the league the club beat Leyton Orient home and away, MK Dons at home and near neighbours Portsmouth away. Almost certainly their biggest league result was the 2-0 victory at Bramall Lane in April over a Sheffield United side going for promotion.

Late goals from Billy Clarke and Paul Hayes also meant the sack for then Blades boss Danny Wilson despite the club being fifth at the time.

The 2012/13 season also saw Crawley beat Championship side Bolton 2-1 in the Capital One Cup, another massive victory.

Two famous FA Cup runs in successive seasons saw Crawley, then under Steve Evans, humble further Championship opposition.

Matt Tubbs scored the only goal in a 1-0 win away at Hull to put then League Two Crawley into the Fifth Round for a second straight time.

They also beat Derby County in the famous competition the season before with Sergio Torres memorably scoring the winner, and a 1-0 win over Torquay in the next round then set up a magical tie with Manchester United at Old Trafford. Given Reds were a Conference outfit at the time arguably makes this their biggest ever scalp.

This season has seen no shortage of big wins also. As well as beating Coventry on the opening day, Reds have defeated Peterborough (home and away) and won at Leyton Orient, so Tuesday’s win over Wolves incredibly made it three victories over sides who were top of the division.

Every Crawley player was superb but Simpson - operating just off Tubbs - was particularly effective. He had a big hand in Clarke’s opening goal and then nearly scored a third with a cheeky flick in the second half as Reds ended the midlander’s 11-game unbeaten run.

And asked if it was the greatest Crawley win he had been involved with, Simpson said: “Probably in the league it would be.

“I was injured for Sheffield United away so I didn’t play in that but I think this is definitely one of the best wins here at the Checkatrade since I’ve been here.

“We beat the likes of Derby and Bristol City, but I really enjoyed tonight and Wolves is a massive club. They’re looking to get promoted this year and maybe again next year but we done ourselves justice tonight.”
