Crawley Wasps Ladies reach Sussex Cup final

Crawley Wasps Ladies Football Club have won their way through to the Sussex Women's Challenge Cup final.

They trounced Burgess Hill Town 6-1 in the semi-final with two goals each by Rebecca Carter and Faye Rabson plus one each from Suzanne Davies and Natalie Stephenson.

In the quarter-final they also hit their opponents for six, thrashing Eastbourne Town 6-0 with Carter clinching a hat-trick, Davies scoring a brace and Toni Smith adding another.

However in the final they face the mighty Brighton & Hove Albion, who play two leagues above Wasps in the national league.

Manager Paul Walker said: “It’s a David and Goliath battle as Brighton are about to go into the Super League 2 and will be playing teams like Arsenal and Chelsea.

“The aim is to play our best and do ourselves proud.”

The final will be played at the Sussex FA head quarters at Lancing tomorrow (Thursday), kick-off at 7.15pm.

Wasps are based at Three Bridges FC and play their home games on the main Ryman League pitch.

The club are an FA Charter Club and have around 160 ladies and girls signed on.

They have been in existence for 25 years this year.

Walker added: “We have an excellent relationship with Crawley Borough Council who have provided us with a dedicated playing facility in Crawley.

This is used by all our youth teams as well as by our ladies reserve team.

On both a club training evening and match days, this is a vibrant and stimulating environment for all involved with the club.”
