First-half goals from Ricky Etheridge and Callum Price saw Wisborough to a 2-1 victory against the same opponents in Championship North of the West Sussex Football League.

It also saw the hosts put to bed their nightmare weekend the previous Saturday against Ewhurst when they were sunk 5-0 after an early red card.

With a point to prove, the hosts started well and carved out numerous chances before Etheridge finished well into the far top corner from the opposite side of the box.

Soon after, Price added a second as his in-swinging corner thwarted everyone and ended up in the far side of the net. Ewhurst came close on a couple of occasions, the best forcing an acrobatic tip over the bar from Leon Kilford.

Wisborough captain Tom Mapstone had a glorious chance to put the game to bed for Green early in the second half as Etheridge showed fancy footwork to break forwards and pull the ball back, only for the combative Mapstone to fire over the bar.

The visitors then ensured a nervy finish as they pulled a goal back, but Wisborough managed to hold out for all three points with Kilford again producing a brilliant save.

Joint manager Ollie Berry said: “It was nice to put the previous weekend right – which a lot of us were hurting from as we felt with 11 men we could really give Ewhurst a game. We wanted a fast start and that’s what we got, it could have been a loft more comfortable with that third goal in the second half.

“As it was, Ewhurst put us under a fair bit of pressure and we were all pretty relieved to hear the final whistle. Credit to everyone as they all put a shift in. Three points makes that table look a lot more interesting and it’s pretty clear already that it’s going to be a tight league.”
