Dawes brace books final-eight place

Lloyd Dawes got both goals in Worthing's Sussex Senior Cup win on Tuesday

Rebels, who came up against fellow Ryman League South side Hastings United, won the third-round clash thanks to strikes in each half from Dawes.

It was a fitting evening for Dawes to net as the fixture was his 100th appearance for Rebels.

Worthing were without a number of first-team regulars including the suspended Omar Bugiel and Brannon O’Neill, while Ryan Richeford and Ben Pope were both rested.

Rebels looked the better side during the early exchanges with Dawes shooting just wide and Callum Overton firing a shot into the side-netting.

Jack Fagan, making his first start for a month, had to be on his toes to produce an excellent save to deny Sam Cole on 25 minutes following a mistake from Corey Heath.

Worthing did take a deserved lead five minutes later.

Jordan Clark’s pinpoint corner found Dawes unmarked at the back post to head home.

Rebels could well have added a second before the break but Zack Newton shot wide and Will Hendon’s fizzing cross evaded everyone.

Dawes doubled Worthing’s lead nine minutes after the break.

It was the same combination for the first as another Clark corner was met by Dawes to make it two.

Just a minute later Dawes thought he had completed his hat-trick after Newton teed him up, but his effort was superbly stopped by Josh Pelling.

Rebels were continuing to cause Hastings some serious problems and a third so nearly came on 70 minutes.

Newton was once again involved as his through-ball found Ryan Quirke, whose shot failed to beat the in-form Pelling.

Fagan did well to stop substitute Jack Harris from netting late on as Worthing booked a quarter-final place.
