Derby delight for Westfield

Westfield claimed local bragging rights courtesy of a 1-0 win away to Bexhill United on Tuesday night.

David Pugh scored the only goal of a feisty Sussex County Football League Division Two derby with a second half penalty after Andy Garman fouled Sam Willett.

Westfield had much the better of the first half as Bexhill were unable to cope with Joe Barham. Bexhill’s cause wasn’t helped by Dan Hill receiving a straight red card for what the referee deemed a two-footed tackle.

Bexhill changed their shape at half time and performed much better during the second half, but it was Westfield who took the points despite James Gatcum suffering a broken ankle in a challenge with Nathan Harding.

Elsewhere last night, Sidley United suffered a fifth straight defeat in all competitions when they went down 3-2 at home to East Grinstead Town in round one of the Sussex Senior Cup.

Grinstead were one-up at half time and doubled their lead on the hour. Jason Taylor pulled one back only for Grinstead to restore their two-goal cushion. Steve Morris made it 3-2 and headed just wide right at the death.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
