Horsham manager Dom Di Paola admitted their victory over Hassocks was not the greatest spectacle but he was just glad to see his side return to the top of the league.

In an even game at Gorings Mead, Hassocks took the lead after 16 minutes, through James Westlake.

But Evan Archibald’s brace meant that the hosts went in at the interval in front and they held on to their lead in the second half and Di Paola was pleased his players did what was necessary to get the win.

He said: “It was not a classic at all, it was one of those tight games with not much in it, but I was glad we could get a result.

“Neither side played really well but we were just happy to come away with a win.

“We weren’t at our best, we still created a few chances in the second half but we just couldn’t put the game to bed.

“You have about 15 of those games each season, they are not great and it is just pleasing to come out of it with a win and our players did what they had to do to win it, it was by no means a classic.”

Hassocks took Horsham by suprise after Bradley Bant crossed for Westlake, who from twelve yards.

After the visitors took the lead, Alex Harris was comfortable in the visitors’ goal, but he could do nothing to stop Archibald before the half-hour mark. The goalscorer picked out Kieron Pamment, whose cross was intially mishit by Graham Martin, but Archibald managed to stick his leg out to send the ball into the bottom corner, to score his first league goal in five weeks.

Then with three minutes remaining of the half, Archibald scored the winner after a great-individual goal, he skipped past his marker before clipping the ball into the far corner.

Similarly the second half was very tight, but despite both sides making chances, neither side could find the back of the net.
