Double bill of football tonight

Three of the area’s senior football clubs will be in action tonight (Tuesday).

Sidley United will be looking to get over their disappointing defeat at home to Chichester City on Saturday as they host St Francis Rangers in Sussex County Football League Division One.

The Blues will be hoping to rediscover their form of last week when they won consecutive league and cup matches 2-0. It will be a tough task, though, against a St Francis side which has scored in every one of its games since the new year, winning six, drawing one and losing one.

“We need to start finding some consistency,” Sidley manager John Lambert said after the weekend loss. “If we want to prove we’re a Division One team, everybody has got to start stepping up.”

Sidley are now just two points above the three relegation places, albeit with games in hand on many of the clubs around them. After years of struggling towards the bottom end of the table, St Francis are in the top 10 at present. Kick-off at Gullivers is 7.45pm.

Elsewhere tonight, the Hastings & District FA Senior Cup will get under way as Little Common host fellow Sussex Division Two outfit Westfield in the first semi-final.

Common come into the game off the back of a convincing 5-0 defeat of Loxwood on Saturday, while Westfield went down 2-0 at leaders Newhaven. Fourth-placed Common are 11 points and five positions above Westfield in the league.

The sides have met once so far this season and a Jamie Crone strike gave Common a 1-0 away win in August’s league fixture. Kick-off at the Recreation Ground is 7.15pm.

The other last four tie, incidentally, is a repeat of last season’s final. Sidley will take on cross-town rivals Bexhill United on Thursday March 21.
