East Preston continue their perfect start

EAST Preston Football Club sit top of the County League after extending their perfect start to the league season to four games.

They lead Peacehaven on goal difference after victories by two-goal margins at Selsey on Tuesday evening (3-1) and at home to Ringmer on Saturday (2-0).

Joe Shelley headed EP into the lead from a Matt Axell corner on 52 minutes at Selsey on Tuesday and then doubled the lead eight minutes later from Nikolaos Kakolyris’ pass. Barney Covill pulled a goal back with 19 minutes remaining, before East Preston sealed their win with five minutes left when Dan Simmonds netted from Rob Boddy’s cross.

A five-minute double from Lawrence Edwards was enough to secure all three points for Dominic Di Paola’s side on Saturday.

EP dominated the game early on and created a number of chances, without applying the killer touch, until Edwards broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time when he side-footed home a cross.

Edwards made it 2-0 five minutes later when the Ringmer defence failed to deal with a corner

The second half saw opportunities for both sides but the score stayed 2-0, although Ringmer finished the match with 10 men after Danny Davis was dismissed for violent conduct with eight minutes to go.

Di Paola said: “We were rubbish in the first half at Selsey but pulled ourselves together for the second half and could have won by another three in the end.

“On Saturday, we played well on a hot day. We created six or seven chances and limited them to only one or two, so I was very pleased with our overall performance.”

EP are at Guildford in the FA Cup preliminary round on Saturday and host Chichester in the league on Monday (11am). However, if the FA Cup tie is drawn on Saturday, the replay will take place on Tuesday.
