Eastbourne Town boss Lambert admits: 'I don't know my best team'

In a fairly even first-half, Dee Okojie put the Uckers’ in front after 37 minutes with a well dispatched penalty.

Town dominated large parts of the second-half and created numerous chances to level but were thwarted by a mixture of poor finishing and heroic defending.

With thirteen minutes remaining, Town were presented with a golden opportunity to level with a penalty of their own which Sam Cole buried into the bottom-right corner. Town would have fancied their chances of going on to win the game with Bailo Camara getting his marching orders as a result of the penalty.

However, Town fell behind for a second time with just over five minutes remaining when Matt Black buried a header into the top-right corner from a long throw in.

“We just seem to shoot ourselves in the foot with our defending,” bemoaned Lambert.

“There wasn’t a lot between the two sides, but our defending is so poor at the moment.

“For long periods, we do alright and then all of a sudden, we just switch off. It’s just a lack of concentration and every time we do that we seem to get punished.

“Uckfield are on a good run at the moment, but I think we deserved at least a draw out of that game, but we have come away empty handed.

“I wouldn’t say we are playing fantastic at the moment.

“We are doing okay, and no side has been better than us, but we are just giving too many goals away.

“That is 13 in seven games now, that is almost two a game and it isn’t good enough.”

Next up for Town, is the visit of Southern Combination Division One outfit Mile Oak in the first-round of the RUR Charity Cup tomorrow, (Saturday, 3pm).

“The next game is at home, so we should win but what I am really looking for is a clean sheet,” explained Lambert.

“We haven’t had a clean sheet all season and so that is my priority.

“Obviously, I want to win the game and I expect to win the game, but I don’t want to win it 2-1 or 3-2, I want to win without conceding.

“Normally, we would make changes like we did for the Hailsham game last week but if I am honest, I don’t know what my best side is at the moment because we keep making changes and still concede goals.”
