A 1-1 draw with Horsham YMCA on Tuesday means EP, who were set to play Rye on Saturday, could wrap up the crown if second-placed Littlehampton lose to St Francis at the weekend.

A Golds victory would mean EP would need just a point in the meeting between the two local rivals at The Sportsfield on Wednesday.

Di Paola said: “I’m looking at it that we just need to take three points. That will happen at some stage. We’re not playing it down, it will happen at some point, it’s just when.

“When I look at it, we are not the side that went 28 games unbeaten now, but it’s just too much football. It’s a shame as it could have been a record-breaking season, we could have come close, if not beaten Peacehaven’s record, but maybe that’s just a bit greedy.”

The EP boss felt it was a fair point at in-form YM with both sides spurning good chances.

After a scoreless first half, debutant Evan Archibald gave EP the lead from a Darren Boswell quick free kick on 47 minutes but Ashley Dugdale netted the equaliser with 15 minutes left.

Danny Gainsford headed over and Archibald’s chip was saved, before EP’s Shaheen Sadough and YM’s Matt Crane were sent off for an off-the-ball incident.
