A Jack Langford penalty and Matt Waterman’s thunderbolt free-kick gave AFC Varndeanians a 2-0 semi-final success at Crabtree Park.

With both strikes coming in the second period, Ferring boss Stuart Maltman felt his side were a little unfortunate to go out after giving their all.

He said: “It was a tough one to take for all of the players. They are a very good side but to lose out following two set-piece situations was a little frustrating.

“We are safe in the league so wanted to give it a good go in the cup, which we did, but fell just short in this.

“I think they will go on to win the league and cup double, so we can have no complaints losing to a side like them.”

Both sides were evenly matched up until the turning point on 65 minutes. Ferring stopper James Willis was adjudged to have felled Langford in the penalty area and a spot-kick was awarded.

Langford then made no mistake with the penalty to fire Varndeanians into the lead.

Ferring substitute Ryan Hallett nearly levelled things up five minutes later but blazed over, before Waterman’s free-kick 15 minutes from time secured Varndeanians’ spot in the final.

FERRING: Willis; Minter, Brant, P.Ward, Harding; Ghent, Naylor, Kaye, M.Ward; Szczepaniuk; Moss. Subs: Willmott (Naylor), Hallett (Moss), Coleman (M.Ward), Upton.
