Worthing Football Club eased to a 5-0 victory at home to struggling Peacehaven & Telscombe in Ryman League South Division this afternoon.

Peacehaven went into the game on the back of eight defeats from nine league matches and having announced they had cut their playing budget in half earlier in the month.

Rebels led 2-0 at half-time, before scoring three more times in the second half in front of a season’s high crowd of 812 on Ladies Day at Woodside Road, with the club supporting the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity.

The visitors, managed by former Worthing boss Simon Colbran, had the first effort when Ash West curled a shot wide from 20 yards but high-flying Rebels quickly took control.

Omar Bugiel fired over from 20 yards after a driving run on seven minutes, before Ryan Richefond flashed a shot just wide from 12 yards after Lloyd Dawes’ cross was only half-cleared.

Harvey Sparks then fired across goal and wide of the far post on 14 minutes, before the visitors were forced into an early change a minute later when Bradley Pritchard came on to replace Max Agnoly, who limped off.

Rebels took the lead just three minutes later when Dawes headed home Jordan Clark’s inswinging corner from inside the six-yard box for his 16th goal of the season.

Worthing should have doubled their lead four minutes later when Dawes was played through by Bugiel but he delayed his shot and then miskicked the ball, before he saw a right-foot shot punched away by Peacehaven keeper Ryan Burbridge only as far as Zack Newton, who was unable to connect with the ball from 12 yards.

Rebels did go 2-0 ahead on 33 minutes when Matt Axell beautifully curled a free kick from 20 yards over the wall and Burbridge was unable to keep it out, diving high to his left.

Will Hendon hit a shot wide from just outside the penalty area on 41 minutes, before Burbridge kept out Hendon’s fierce cross-shot two minutes later as Rebels took a two goal lead into the break.

The visitors made a change at the break as Alieu Secka came on to replace Burbridge in goal. His first job was to pick the ball out of the back of the net as Hendon got in down the right on 48 minutes and crossed for Bugiel - in his 100th appearance for Rebels - to chest the ball home from just a yard out.

Rebels got a fourth just three minutes later as Peacehaven failed to clear their lines from a corner and after Corey Heath’s left-foot shot was parried by Secka, Newton pounced to score.

Jordan Clark was then denied by Secka, who also did well to hold on to Hendon’s low centre as Rebels threatened to run riot.

Dawes had a low 25-yard strike saved by Secka on the hour, before Ryan Richefond headed Bugiel’s cross over from six yards on 65 minutes.

Dawes got his second on 67 minutes when he crashed the ball home from eight yards after Hendon again got in down the right and pulled the ball back.

Harvey Sparks almost got a sixth on 75 minutes but his thunderous shot from 25 yards came back off the bar and Bugiel headed the rebound straight at Secka.

Dawes also then saw an effort come back off the bar, before Hendon was denied by Secka as Worthing continued to dominate. Dawes then had a late shot deflected over and another effort saved by Secka as he hunted a hat-trick.
