Football returns: Westfield have to settle for draw with Cuckfield

Westfield’s long awaited return to football ended in a 1-1 draw against Cuckfield Rangers in one of the new mini leagues set up to complete the Mid Sussex League premier division season.

The opening match was played in front of no supporters, but was a very entertaining game from start to finish.

It was pretty open and both teams will probably feel they could have got a winner, Westfield started the brighter and should have been two up by the time the opening goal came. It was worth the wait however as some sharp passing and good movement allowed George Landais to volley home from 20 yards.

Seemingly in control and playing some good attacking football Westfield were stung in injury time at the end of the first half with a bullet header from the Cuckfield captain following a corner.

Again Westfield started the second half brightest, and shots form long range were raining in on the Cuckfield goal but to no avail.

As the half wore on Cuckfield dominated and were it not for smart keeping from the returning Matt Crutwell the visitors could have stolen the points. Cruttwell smartly tipped a low drive round the post before acrobatically tipping over an effort from 25 yards.

There was still time for Westfield to hit the post as a smart drive from Sam Winter ended up with the Cuckfield keeper pushing his effort onto the post and away to safety.

Overall this a good game to come back to, which ended in a fair result. Westfield’s next match is Eastbourne Rangers away on Monday.
