Footballers keen to build on wins

Rye United and Sidley United will be eager to build on weekend victories with three points on home soil tonight (Tuesday).

Sidley will entertain Crowborough Athletic (kick-off 7.45pm) and Rye will host Hailsham Town (kick-off 7.30pm) in Sussex County Football League Division One.

Rye manager Scott Price is looking forward to playing at The Salts for the first time this season. He said: “It will be nice. I don’t think people realise what it does to you (keep playing away). It’s hard because you don’t get that bonding that you get in home games when people stay behind for a drink afterwards.”

Price’s charges moved up to third on the back of an excellent 4-1 victory at Redhill on Saturday, while Hailsham are third-bottom having lost eight of their nine matches in all competitions so far this term.

Chris Gould is expected to come into the squad after transferring from Sidley. “He’s done the rounds and never really settled, but he’s a Rye lad and to me it’s a good signing,” added Price.

Buoyed by back-to-back wins, including a 4-1 success at home to Lancing in the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup on Saturday, Sidley are now targeting some consistency.

Assistant manager Jamie Podmore said: “We’ve got the players in now that we wanted; it’s a case now of being consistent. Unless we have to make changes, we’re trying to get people to get used to each other.”

Sidley have picked up nine points from their six league matches so far, while Crowborough have taken six from six. Andy Hales is struggling with the injury which forced him off during the first half against Lancing, but Sidley expect to field a similar squad.
