Former Bolton and Wycombe player Jamie Mascoll says he’s ready to show the Lewes fans more of what he can do after a man-of-the-match debut helped the Rooks beat Sevenoaks in the FA Trophy.

Tony Russell’s team set up a Trophy first-round tie away to Southern League premier south side Chesham as Deon Moore’s goal proved the difference at home to Sevenoaks.

The Rooks had a setback in midweek with a 4-1 Isthmian premier loss at Herne Bay. They were 4-0 down before half-time and the loss has left them 17th ahead of tomorrow’s visit to Enfield.

On Saturday Mascoll, who has played for Bolton and Wycombe and also had a spell at Charlton, impressed on his Rocks bow.

“It’s amazing here,” he said afterwards. “When I spoke to Tony before joining the club, one of the first things he said to me was that the supporters are brilliant. That pitch is a delight too. And it’s great to win and get a clean sheet to start things off.

“It’s been pretty easy settling in with the lads. The reason for that is because I’ve played under Tony before. So when you know the management team and how they work, and when they know you, it makes for a pretty easy settling in period.

“I already knew some of the boys too and have followed Lewes for a good while. I know Tony always creates great teams, and the group he’s got here is ideal.

“I watched a lot of results before coming here, and last year I followed Lewes pretty closely because a few of my friends were here. The players were have here are great.”

Russell had praise for his new signing. “It’s his first game in a long time and he was great,” said Russell.

“I know all about Jamie and what qualities he brings, and the fans will see as he gets fitter he’ll be even better.

“Jamie’s played for Bolton, Wycombe and Charlton, so he knows his stuff. And he’s a great lad in the dressing room. The boys have taken to him.

“It’s important that when we bring players in they’re better than what we’ve had, and I feel Jamie is an upgrade.”

Russell was pleased with the Trophy win. “We had to be patient,” he said. “I said to the players at half time we needed a little bit of quality to win, and the goal was top drawer.”
