Four on the spin for Rye

Rye United consolidated second place with a routine 3-0 victory away to Selsey on Saturday.

A brace of goals from Andy Atkin and one from Jordan Woodley made it four consecutive victories in all competitions for the Quarterboys and avenged a 4-0 loss to the same opposition in a Sussex RUR Charity Cup tie last month.

Atkin gave Rye an eighth minute lead with a good header from a corner and Woodley doubled Rye’s advantage after a quarter-of-an-hour with a terrific half-volley from just outside the box following some great football on the right.

Rye enjoyed a comfortable two-goal cushion at half time and although Selsey came at them a bit during the second period, debutant goalkeeper Josh Willis didn’t have a great deal to do other than one shot straight at him.

Atkin put the result beyond doubt with another header from Woodley’s brilliant cross around 20 minutes from time. The goal also took the former Eastbourne Borough striker top of the Sussex County League Division One scoring charts.

A full report will appear in this Friday’s Rye Observer. Sidley United’s match at home to Lingfield in the same division was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
