Frangou strikes twice to end Wick’s losing run

Wick Football Club ended a torrid run of seven successive defeats with a comfortable home win over Steyning Town on Saturday.

The hosts started with a point to prove and they went ahead after eight minutes as Michael Frangou netted with a spectacular overhead kick from a Kieran Urquhart cross from the right.

Wick continued to launch attack after attack but could not create too many clear-cut chances, before they doubled their lead just before the break when Frangou netted from close range from Dan Cox’s corner.

The prolific striker then spurned a decent chance to grab a first-half hat-trick but after, being played through by Seb Bagyura, he dragged his shot wide, althoughWick would have no doubt been buoyed by their dominant display in the opening 45 minutes.

However, the visitors came out fired up for the start of the second half and Wick keeper Jordan Matthews was tested on a couple of occasions as Steyning set about finding a way back into the match.

Wick could not find the elusive third goal which would have left the result of the match beyond all doubt but they nevertheless held on for the three points.

Wick joint manager Dave Berkowitz said: “We did okay without playing exceptionally well but I’m happy to get the win. Hopefully, this result might spur us on and it could be the start of another good run.”
