CANVEY ISLAND completed a league double over Peacehaven & Telscombe with a 2-1 victory at The Prospects Stadium.
Canvey were made to rue a number of missed chances two minutes before the interval when Rio Bryan-Edwards fouled Jamie Brotherton inside the area.
Joe Gatting stepped up and drilled his spot kick low straight down the middle of the goal to score.
With a sense of déjà vu going into the break, it was important that Canvey got off to a good start in the second half. It couldn’t have been much better as a the Gulls were awarded a penalty for handball inside a minute.
As Gatting did earlier, Harrison Chatting placed his penalty straight down the middle of the goal to draw his side level. Canvey were awarded another penalty after Dan McLaughlin brought down Marlon Agyakwa as the pacey forward burst into the area from the right.
Harrison Chatting stepped up once again, but this time Anthony Di Bernardo guessed right and saved the spot kick with a full length dive to his right. Canvey did eventually take the lead on 74 minutes when the ball found its way to Enoch Showunmi level with the post six yards out with his back to goal. He managed to pull the ball back from Rio Bryan-Edwards who was unmarked on the penalty spot, but his powerful shot was saved by Di Bernado. However, such was the power of the shot the keeper was unable to hold onto the ball, with John Easterford on hand to tap home the rebound for his first of the season.
As the match drew towards its conclusion Peacehaven had plenty of pressure in the final third without finding the equaliser.
Next Saturday The Magpies are away to table toppers Margate. The next home game is on Saturday December 27 when Maidstone Utd are the visitors.
