Goal ace set to stay at Rye

Rye manager Marc Gall says that the accomplished striker has turned down a seven-day approach from Ryman Football League Division One South outfit Horsham.

Gall said: “He’s staying put. He had a chuckle to himself when I told him Horsham had come in for him. He said ‘with the amount of games we’ve got to play in x amount of days, the easy thing for me to do would be to walk away, but it’s not in my character to do that’. He’s an honest man and it’s good to have people like him around.”

Former Hastings United, Tonbridge Angels and Maidstone United forward Olorunda has scored four goals since rejoining Rye during November.

Elsewhere on the player front, Jack Hope is expected to come back into the fold for the rest of the season, but defender Ryan Cooper has gone back to Eastbourne Town.

“He (Cooper) said he didn’t feel like he was getting regular football,” continued Gall. “I said ‘no problem, good luck’. He certainly doesn’t leave with any bad press.”

It’s been yet another frustrating week for Rye because of the continuing wet weather. Last weekend’s scheduled trip to Chichester City and the visit from Ringmer on Tuesday night both succumbed to waterlogged pitches, meaning that 12 of their last 15 scheduled matches have been postponed.

“It’s just a nightmare,” Gall went on. “I’ve never known anything like it; it’s so frustrating. It’s the worst thing that could’ve happened to us and it’s kicked everyone’s appetite for the football season into touch.”

Rye have 19 Sussex County Football League Division One games remaining and are still involved in two cup competitions. There are just 11 Saturdays left until the scheduled end of the season on April 26, although the league is seeking a week’s extension.

“We’ve still got half a season to play in x amount of weeks,” Gall added. “It’s almost becoming an impossible task to finish the season. The only good thing is everyone else is in the same boat.”

Rye have three games scheduled for the next six days. They are due to visit Dorking Wanderers tomorrow (Saturday) and Eastbourne Town in a twice-postponed Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup third round tie on Monday night before hosting Hailsham Town on Thursday night.
