Golds and EP looking forward to FA Vase clashes

TWO local sides are in FA Vase first round action on Saturday, when £900 prize money is up for grabs.

East Preston entertain County League leaders Pagham and Littlehampton travel to high-flying Combined Counties League Premier Division side Camberley Town.

EP boss Dominic Di Paola knows his side have a tough task ahead as they meet former Littlehampton and Wick boss Carl Stabler’s Pagham side, who won 13 successive league games before their 2-1 defeat at home to Hassocks on Tuesday evening.

Di Paola said: “It’s going to be a good test for us but it’s a game that we’ll be going in to try to win.

“They’re a quality side and are high on confidence, so it will be a test of our character.

“They’ve got good players and Scott Murfin is a dangerous player, who’s always capable of getting goals in tight games. He’s a top-class player but they’ve got good players all over the park.”

If the game is drawn, EP will travel to Pagham for the replay on Tuesday evening.

EP have reached the first round with away wins at Chessington & Hook (3-1) and Corinthian (2-1).

Littlehampton head to Camberley, who are fourth in their division after seven wins from their opening 13 league games, after wins over two fellow County League sides in the qualifying rounds.

Golds manager Mark Bennett, who was a player when Littlehampton reached the semi-finals of the competition in 1991, said: “We’re all looking forward to it and we’re not under any pressure going into the game.

“We’ve had a look at their results and they’re doing quite well in their league and have scored quite a lot of goals. But we’ll just go there to enjoy it. ”

Littlehampton hope to have keeper Jon Hendrick, who went off with an ankle injury at half-time on Saturday, fit and also hope to have Dan Kempson and Jerry Manning back from injuries.

If the game is drawn, the replay will take place at the Sportsfield on Tuesday evening.

Golds beat Haywards Heath 2-0 in a replay, after a 3-3 draw, in the first-qualifying round, before overcoming local rivals Arundel 2-1 in the second qualifying round.
