Golds fight back to win at Wick

LITTLEHAMPTON Football Club piled more misery on local rivals Wick on Monday when they fought back from a goal down to win 3-1 at Crabtree Park.

The defeat was Wick’s fifth in a row to start the season, although joint manager Dave Berkowitz believes his side are improving all the time and just need to cut out defensive mistakes.

He said: “I feel that we’re turning the corner but on Monday we made three mistakes, which gave them all three goals.

“We went 1-0 up, could have got a second and were probably the better side in the first half.

“But they equalised, then missed a penalty before half-time and then they scored twice more through our mistakes.

“Slowly but surely we’re getting there but we just need to get a win to get some confidence and then we’ll be all right.”

Ross Adams gave Wick the lead on 24 minutes when he ran on to a through ball and slotted past Golds keeper Jon Hendrick from 15 yards.

Adams and Nathan Parke then had half-chances to double Wick’s lead, before Littlehampton levelled on 35 minutes. Jerry Manning played a one-two with George Gaskin, before he fired home from the edge of the box.

Things could have got worse for Wick when Danny Hand was brought down in the penalty area by Michael Hamm but Hand’s spot-kick hit a post.

Wick keeper Jordan Matthews made some excellent saves before Gaskin gave Golds the lead on 71 minutes with a low shot from 18 yards.

Golds then sealed the win with nine minutes left when Michael Hendrick touched the ball home from Mark Burgess’ goalward header.

Littlehampton boss Mark Bennett said: “It was the worst we’ve played all season and I wasn’t happy at all. After Saturday, we just didn’t turn up and the only positive was we got three points.”

Golds travel to Newhaven in the FA Vase first-qualifying round on Saturday.
