Golds lose to United after win at Oakwood

LITTLEHAMPTON Football Club boss John Suter blasted his side’s inept first-half performance on Tuesday evening when they lost 3-1 to Worthing United in County League Division 2.

Golds were two down at the break after goals from Asa Nicholson and Joe Shelley, and three down soon afterwards, but although Suter rang the changes he concluded a strike from Mark Burgess came, “too little too late to get anything from it”.

He said: “We were dreadful, so much in fact that on the walk from the dugout to the changing rooms at half-time I struggled to think of anything good to say to any player.

“If it was a Saturday, I would have said I’d thought they had been out on a big drinking session the night before, everyone was just lacking any ability at all.

“All of their goals were poor ones to give away, things improved when we made three subs and we battered their goal a bit to be fair. If we had got another goal right after our first, we may have put them on the rack.

“But I have no complaints with who won the game, Worthing thoroughly deserved it.”

Asa Nicholson volleyed home the opener on four minutes and Joe Shelley headed home a Billy Rayner free kick on 34 minutes to make it 2-0.

Nicholson nodded home United’s third two minutes into the second half, before Burgess scored a late consolation.

Golds had ended their six-game winless run on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Oakwood.

After falling behind in the second minute, Golds went close when Richard Ghent hit the bar, and Chris Hazell shot wide.

Niall O’Hagan slammed the angle of post and bar on 36 minutes, before Golds drew level on the stroke of half-time. Burgess, who has re-joined from East Preston, was brought down in the penalty area and O’Hagan scored from the spot.

Chances continued to come Golds way in the second half but Jason Jarvis was soon red-carded for foul and abusive language.

However, Littlehampton got the winner on 58 minutes when Taylor cut inside and finished neatly after Ghent had played him in and 10-man Golds held on.

Suter said: “We could have won by more, they started well but we took the game by the scruff of the neck and got through it. It’s a tough place to go, so it was pleasing.”
