Golds up to second after Midhurst triumph

Littlehampton Football Club moved up to second place in County League Division 2 on Tuesday evening with a hard-fought 5-1 win over Midhurst & Easebourne.

Golds boss Mark Bennett was impressed with the visitors, who are now managed by former Wick and Arundel boss Gary Block, and said: “They are a good side and the first half was pretty even.
“We played well, though, and for the neutral it must have been a good game to watch.”

George Gaskin slotted Golds into a eighth-minute lead from Nathan Peacock’s flick-on but Midhurst levelled through Michael Asare on the half-hour mark.

Jamie Atterwell and Gaskin both hit the woodwork as the sides were level going into half-time.

Gaskin notched his second to put Littlehampton back ahead on 56 minutes, before Mitchell Hand, who had an outstanding game, made it 3-1 from the penalty spot after a foul on Danny Hand on 68 minutes.

Gaskin completed his hat-trick and netted for the 16th time this season with a strike from outside the penalty area on 79 minutes.

Mitchell Hand scored from the penalty spot again in the closing stages after a foul on Jamie Thompson.

Gold then almost added an excellent sixth but Gaskin’s first-time shot hit the post after Alex Kew found him following a superb passing move.

The only downside of the evening for Littlehampton was losing Nathan Peacock (hamstring) and Liam O’Connor (knee) to injuries in the first half.
