Hastings edged out by Hendon

A FINE second half performance could not prevent Hastings United from slipping to a 2-1 defeat away to Hendon.

The result leaves Hastings still one place above the Ryman Premier relegation zone but now by only two points following Tooting & Mitcham United’s victory away to fellow struggers Aveley.

The U’s had plenty of early possession but it was play-off hopefuls Hendon who took the lead on 14 minutes. Greg Ngoyi cut in from the flank and drove a low ball into the path of Elliott Charles who slid home from close range, although it looked as though the final touch came off his hand.

Three minutes later the Greens doubled their advantage when Michael Lewis beat two defenders and let fly with a low shot which flew in off the post.

Hastings got themselves back in the match on the half-hour courtesy of a superb free kick from Lee Carey which gave the goalkeeper no chance.

The goal provided a huge boost and the U’s came more into the game in the second half but were unable to make the most of what opportunities came their way.

Ryman Premier bottom six standings (played-points): Harrow Borough 27-30, Hastings Utd 27-27, Tooting & Mitcham Utd 26-25, Leatherhead 25-23, Aveley 28-18, Horsham 28-11.
