Hastings “top of the pile” for new boy

Trevor McCreadie said that Hastings United were “top of the pile” as several clubs chased his signature.

The 19-year-old forward made an impressive goalscoring debut in the 3-0 win over Westfield on Tuesday night.

He said: “I had interest from a few clubs, one or two of them at a higher level, but Hastings was top of the pile.

“I went to have a look at Hastings and really liked the way everything looked. They’ve got good fans and John (Maggs, manager) was saying the club wants to go in the right direction. If John wants you, you’re doing something right and he just said ‘go out and enjoy your football’.”

Eastbourne-based McCreadie was at Bristol City as a schoolboy, and later spent 18 months at Crawley Town when they won back-to-back promotions and played Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Spells at a number of clubs have followed, and Eastbourne Borough and Whitehawk showed interest earlier in the year, before he joined United from Crawley Down Gatwick.

“The main aim is to win the league - I think they (Hastings) are too strong for it - and if I can help out with some goals that will be great,” he added.

“They’re a great bunch of lads and made me feel welcome straight away. I love getting the ball and running at people, but I’ve not played in about three weeks so I’ve still got a lot more sharpness to come.”
