Heath’s run ended by title-chasing Eastbourne

For a while it looked as Heath would cause another shock result following their 4-2 victory earlier in the month, but it wasn’t to be as a late strike from Eastbourne’s Aaron Capon in the 88th minute gave the visitors a victory that moved them to within one point of leaders Horsham.

An entertaining first half saw some good football played by both teams with the defences looking rock solid, as a result the chances were few and far between.

Heath took the lead five minutes into the restart when Piers McDermott slipped the ball through to Ollie Moore who chipped a shot that deflected off Eastbourne keeper Greg Nessling into the goal.

Wes Tate came close for Eastbourne three minutes later, but his shot from a free-kick went just over the bar and from another free-kick midway through the half, Nathan Crabb hit a shot a yard wide.

The visitor’s attacks were coming more frequently with Heath sitting back trying to keep what they had, but on 74 minutes, Daniel Bowell picked the ball up and ran at the Heath defence, slipped past a couple of challenges and rifled in a left-foot shot that nestled into the bottom left corner.

The visitor’s threw everything at Heath in search of a winning goal and were rewarded when Capon attacked down the right, cut inside and hit a beauty that flew past Chester to earn his team an important victory in their search for a return to Ryman League football.

Heath manager Steve Painter was disappointed not to get anything from the game but pleased his team competed against a very good side.
