Toby Bancroft opened the scoring after just 12 minutes but Aarran Racine’s close-range volley brought the hosts level just six minutes later.

Dayshonne Golding netted his first Worthing goal on the half hour mark to bring the Mackerel Men in front and Ollie Pearce extended their lead from the penalty spot after the break.

Kieron Pamment added a fourth for his first Reds goal since his return to The Crucial Environmental Stadium two months ago but Wingate found a consolation in the final minute when Great Evans slotted underneath Carl Rushworth in the final minute of normal time.

With Worthing remaining seven points clear at the top of the Isthmian Premier Division, Hinshelwood was pleased with how his side came back from a goal down.

He said: “When we went a goal behind it would have been easy for the players to get despondent but they rallied well and didn’t let it affect them.

“The two goals before half-time really helped settle everybody down and we played with a lot more confidence in the second half. It was a good, comfortable performance.

“We’re disappointed that we’ve concede two goals in the manner we did but at this stage of the season it’s about performing well and getting three points and we did both on Saturday.”

Hinshelwood was also delighted to see Golding and Pamment on the scoresheet. He said: “That’s what we brought them into the club for. In the first half, Dayshonne was trying a little too hard.

“His game didn’t seem natural, it seemed like he was trying to play safe.

"Forward players need to play with a bit more fluidity about them and let things just happen naturally and he was definitely more in that state in the second half.

“It was good to see and to get a goal will help settle him down. It’s been the same with Pammy. He’s been trying too hard in front of goal.

"Now he’s off the mark hopefully that’s two players that will settle down and feel like they belong in the squad.

"We hope to see more good performances from them moving forward.”
