Hinshelwood still wants more after cup victory

Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood praised his side for overcoming Tonbridge Angels on penalties last night - but demanded better attacking play.

Alex Parsons scored the winning penalty at Woodside Road to send the Reds through to the third round of the Velocity Trophy.

A Sam Rents equaliser in the second half sent the match to spot-kicks after Liam King had put the Angels 1-0 up in the first half.

Left-back Rents has now scored four goals in his last seven matches and Hinshelwood said: “He’s been chipping in with a lot of goals recently. One concern that I’ve got is that we are so reliant on our left-back for our goals.

We want the goals to come from wide and far and for everyone to chip in. It’s a bit of a problem we’ve got to address.

“The next challenge for us is to keep possession and have more shots on target, get those stats up and convert them into more goals. Even on Saturday (a 1-1 draw at AFC Hornchurch) we got the ball into good areas.

“We’re patient but I don’t want to be a nice team that just gets a lot of the ball. I want us to play with more conviction and purpose in our play. I still want us to keep the ball like we have done in the past two games, but we need to make something of it.”

Still, the Worthing boss was happy that the squad held their own against the second-placed Angels.

He said: “They’re a good side and it was always going to be be a tight contest. I thought we could have possibly gone on and won the game in the second half. We did get into some good areas and we didn’t quite make the most of the opportunities that we had but we were the team on the front on.

“Trying to attack, you always leave yourself a little bit open to it going the other way and we dealt with the one opportunity they got. We would have liked the game to have ended it in normal time, but full credit to the players. It showed their character again to stick together.”

Hinshelwood singled out goalkeeper Kleton Perntreou for praise after he saved three penalties to keep Worthing in the shootout: “He’s really a part of the group now. He’s really settled in and I think he’s enjoying his football.”

With an FA Trophy tie in Bedford coming up this weekend, the Worthing manager is now focusing on readying a stretched squad for the trip north, with Zack Newton and Reece Meekums not available, as well as Parsons and Darren Budd being suspended.

He said: “We’ve just got to see who we’ve got fit. Ricky (Aguiar) took a knock so it’s really a case of getting everyone together Thursday and seeing if we can wrap anyone up for the pitch on Saturday.

“I hate managers that go on about injuries and stuff like that but we are really threadbare for Saturday. We’ve got team spirit and a good squad so we’re going to have to be our best on Saturday.”
