Hope springs eternal as Elmer hammer Mashbarn

Elmer got straight back to winning ways after their enforced lay-off because of the recent bad weather with a 6-2 demolition of Mashbarn Classic.

The Sompting-based visitors must have wondered if their journey to Mill Road was worth it as early as the first minute when Matt Hope powered in an unstoppable header following excellent work from strike partner Nathan Sadler.

Jack Davis doubled the hosts’ lead on 24 minutes when his header found the net from an Alex Peach corner. Two minutes later Hope scored again with yet another header to make it 3-0.

For a while the Elmer team went missing for a silly five minutes allowing Mashbarn to claim two swift goals making the score 3-2.

Stung back into action, top scorer Sadler scored Elmer’s fourth goal with a simple tap-in after being set up by the impressive Ronnie Lewry.

Hope completed the first-half scoring right on half-time when he latched on to a long clearance from Kyle Belcher.

In comparasion to the crazy first half, the second period was somewhat sterile.

A couple of Elmer players took knocks, but because of stretched resources had to play out the game resulting in a number of tactical changes. Eventually, though, Kainu Lewis had to be withdrawn, being replaced by Carl Lawrence.

Lewry was playing up front to protect his injured ankle but that didn’t stop him getting on to a clever pass from Sadler to make the score 6-2 and send Elmer into the quarter-finals of this competition in the very first season they’ve entered the trophy.

ELMER: K Nanson; Lewis (Lawrence), Belcher, O’Donnell, Gardner; Lewry, Davis, Bann, Peach; Hope, Sadler.
