Horsham manager Dominic Di Paola is pleased to be dropping down into familiar surroundings next season as he aims to mount a promotion challenge in the Southern Combination League.

Having been installed as the new Hornets boss at the end of last season, he oversaw the final few games as they were relegated from the South Division of the Ryman League.

The drop to Step 5 was completely confirmed at the FA Leagues Committee meeting last month and their place in the newly-named SCL - formally the Sussex County Football League - was rubber stamped.

Di Paola, who won the County League with former side East Preston, has recently returned from a holiday to Argentina and Brazil and is ready to get his pre-season preparations underway.

He said: “It’s all hands to the pump now as usual. In some ways (going into the SCL), it’s the best of a bad situation.

“We cannot have too many complaints as we virtually knew we were down and we could have found ourselves in a different league.

“It’s nice dropping down into a league that we know. We have not gone into a different league with lots of travelling and we can deal with players from a catchment area we know.

“The aim now is to get a strong side together and challenge at the top of the league.”
