Hosts play the conditions as Loxwood lose at Eastbourne United

Loxwood boss Mark Beard said their defeat at Eastbourne United on Saturday was down to the hosts playing the conditions much better than themselves.

The Magpies led 1-0 at half-time through an own goal, but United, who had the wind in the second half, netted three times in the spaces of ten minutes early in the half.

Beard said: “The condition were awful and we won the toss and kicked with the win to try and get an advantage.

“The pitch was horrendous and they obviously had the win in the second half. We conceded from a corner, a free-kick and then conceded from trying to play out from the back.

“There wasn’t any football played or any tactics involved, it was who could play the conditions better and they did.

“In hindsight maybe we could have just got it and kicked it - we want to play football, but were playing in completely the wrong areas and dribbling and the ball getting stuck in the mud.”

In the first half, Michael Wood cut inside and hit the side netting, Charlie Pitcher was denied from a one on one and Lewis Scally went close with a header. With five minutes remaining, Loxwood took the lead as a Sam Beard corner came off a defender and ended up in the net.

In the second half, United levelled on 59 minutes as a corner was cleared off the line, but then forced home by Nik Chamberlain.

Four minutes later, United took the lead as a free-kick found Chamberlain who lofted the ball into the far corner and they wrapped up the points as Liam Baitup slotted home.

Loxwood: Smith, Summerfield, French, Scally, Courtney, Wood (Jee), Cave, Swaine (Pritchard), Bachelor (Nurse), Beard, Pitcher.

Loxwood host Hassocks tonight in their first home match since October 31.
