He said: ”I wanted us to be relentless, I wanted us to be ruthless and I didn’t want us to give Peacehaven an inch. That’s why I was very vocal from the word go until the last minute.

“I didn’t want them coming here and getting any kind of confidence. I know their situation but it’s a game of football and I wasn’t going to give them an inch.”

A crowd of 812 watched the game and Meeney said: “It was a fantastic crowd and I’d like to thank each and every person that was present. We want crowds at Worthing and it’s great that everyone has turned out today.

“It was a masterstroke by the club to switch it to a Sunday. It allowed everyone to come with their families and it was all for a good cause.

“But why just turn up every now and then? Why not make it a regular fixture? We all want the best for the community and Worthing is the community, so why not come and share the emotions of everyone here.

“Let’s get Worthing on the map and and let’s start making Andy Murray eat his words a little bit.”
