Improved run comes to an end

Hastings United’s three-match unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-0 defeat at Billericay Town on Tuesday night.

Although Billericay deserved their win, the scoreline was a touch harsh on Hastings because there wasn’t much between the teams for the majority of a Ryman Football League Premier Division match played on a dreadful pitch.

Play-off hopefuls Billericay took a 15th minute lead when Micah Hyde headed home Phil Anderson’s cross, but Hastings came close to an equaliser when Russell Eldridge’s free kick was superbly saved.

Ross Sutton missed a golden opportunity after 70 minutes which could well have resulted in a different outcome and Billericay went two-up eight minutes later when Shawn Beveney turned in Cedric Ngakam’s cross.

Hastings rather fell apart after that and Beveney teed up fellow substitute Ryan O’Rawe to add an 84th minute third. Jason Hopkinson’s side, nevertheless, remains in the final safe spot of fifth-from-bottom.

Hastings (4-5-1): Chalmers-Stevens; Rowe, Ray, Jirbandey, Storrie; Perkins (Sutton 70), Olorunda, Hall (Davisson 60), Beautyman (Manning 80), Eldridge; Porter.
