Injury rules Barry out of Euros

Gareth Barry has been ruled out of Euro 2012 because of a groin injury.

The Hastings born and raised midfielder, 31, had a scan on Monday which confirmed he had a tear to the muscle in his lower abdomen.

“I’m very disappointed to lose Gareth,” said England manager Roy Hodgson, who has called-up Everton defender Phil Jagielka to replace Barry. “I’m sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros.”

Barry, who has played more than 50 times for his country, was forced off less than 30 minutes after he was introduced as a half time substitute in the 1-0 friendly win against Norway in Oslo on Saturday.

“Not only was he [Barry] a member of my original 23-man squad, but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years,” Hodgson added. “I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament.”

A Barclays Premier League winner with Manchester City last month, Barry began playing youth football locally for St Vincents and Spartan before being snapped up by Brighton & Hove Albion and later Aston Villa.

The one-time William Parker Sports College student captained the Midlands club and is eighth in their all-time list of appearances. Barry joined Manchester City three years ago for a fee of £12 million.
