Kirkham’s strike at Cowfold came 17 minutes from time to seal a first league victory in more than two months.

Worthing Town Leisure assistant manager Dominic Justice was relieved to take all three points and said: “It was pleasing to return to winning ways. The pitch was terrible and it made life difficult for us.

“We’ve played most of the top teams so far and been in most of the matches.

“Coming up against Cowfold, it was a team around us in the league, so it was important to get the victory.”

Both sides found things tricky in the first half as they struggled to adapt to the tricky surface.

Kirkham got the only goal after 73 minutes when he was quickest to react following a parry by Phillip Marshall.

Declan Jenkins then fired straight at Marshall late on as it ended 1-0 to Leisure.
