Knockaert twisted past Toby Alderweireld but then shot straight at Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga from six yards on 66 minutes.

Tottenham, who already led through Harry Kane's penalty, went on to double their lead 14 minutes from time through Erik Lamela.

Knockaert made it 2-1 in injury-time but said afterwards: “I managed to get one and could have had two – but the chance I missed at the start is the important one.

“The chance was one where I did everything perfectly apart from the shot – I tried to secure it for my right foot.

“I thought it was the right thing to do but the keeper didn’t move – if I had gone either side it would probably have gone in."

Looking back at the game as a whole, Knockaert said: “We’re a bit disappointed because we didn’t play the way we know we can in the first half.

“We were a bit deep and then conceding the penalty didn’t help us – but we came in at half-time and talked about we needed to press higher.

“We did that and had chances in the second half – I had a chance and if I scored, it would have been a different game, I feel like we could have got something from the game today.”
