Lacrosse and football teams bring success to Oakwood

Oakwood SchooL pupils are basking in the glory of one of the most successful sporting years in their 100-year history.

From individual fixtures to national tournaments, the upper school boys and girls have demonstrated skill, teamwork and dedication.

The under-11 football team won the Wessex League and were presented with the trophy on the Fratton Park pitch during a Pompey home game.

Spurred on by this, the same age group won the Wessex League in rugby as well as beating off strong competition to win three regional tournaments.

The girls also displayed fantastic ability and determination to triumph in four demanding netball tournaments, missing the national finals of an under-11 championship by just one point.

The Oakwood pop lacrosse team are the regional champions following a tournament in Eastleigh and are heading to the national finals in Hertfordshire in June.

Mathew Vella, Oakwood’s deputy head and head of sport, said: “Since joining Oakwood in January, I have been overwhelmingly impressed with the standard of play and the attitude of the children.

“They have risen to every challenge I’ve put in front of them and whether they are naturally sporty or not, always take part with enthusiasm and energy.

“I’m raising the profile of some different sports, like pop lacrosse, which is proving very popular, and we’re gearing up for a very busy summer of cricket, rounders and athletics, when the weather improves a little!”
