FAWPL League Cup

Goals from Chloe Dowdell, Jade Widdows, Shannon Albuery and an opposition own goal sent Chichester through to the next round of the league cup.

The game was played at a furious pace from the kick-off with Cambridge looking to run at Chichester with their extremely quick forward three, but the Chichester defence stood firm and keeper Sally Thompson in goal claimed crosses with ease.

At the other end, Chloe Dowdell on the right was supplying balls into the box but Chichester were lacking sufficient numbers in the box to make a challenge on goal. The Cambridge goalkeeper was cutting out balls aimed for Widdows and Aulbrey up front.

The first goal came in bizarre circumstances when after good pressure from Jenna Fowlie, a home defender played back to her keeper at an awkward height after the ball had hit her thigh and it skewed off and into the goal.

Good work between Widdows and Aulbrey up front saw the latter through on goal and with only the keeper to beat she placed her shot into the top corner.

Chichester began the second half working hard to keep up the tempo and the third goal came when Dowdell unleashed a fearsome drive from 20 yards across the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

One counter attack did lead to an opportunity when the injured Emma Alexandre lunged to win the ball in the box and gave away a penalty. The spot-kick was put wide. The let-off spurred City to put the tie to bed and Widdows and Aulbery linked up for Widdows to score.

Chichester are in cup action again this weekend with a big home FA Cup tie with Poole Town Ladies. Kick off is at 2pm at Oaklands Park.

Chichester began slowly, being put under heavy pressure straight from the off with a number of through-balls running through to Galway in goal.

Skye Gould and Gemma Halford were working well in a new centre-back partnership, with Zoe Hughes-Jones and Hannah Chalk contributing to an effective back-line.

The defence were limiting QPR to chances from long range which were easily dealt with by Galway.

Steph Mills was a constant threat for Chichester, with her pace and determination creating problems for the QPR defence. A through-ball put her clear only for the goalkeeper to make a good save.

In the 24th minute QPR struck with a rocket of a shot to take the lead. This rattled Chi and nine minutes later, QPR struck again when a bit of miscommunication and good dribbling ability allowed a QPR striker to run through the Chichester defence with little challenge and to slot the ball into the bottom corner.

Following the half-time interval, City began to find their feet. A through-pass from Jemma Cottam Verbruggen just evaded Lauren Ellis.

An attack down the left found Hannah Chalk and she whipped a perfectly-weighted cross to Lauren Ellis, who was alone in the box. Ellis controlled the ball perfectly on the turn to slot the ball underneath the QPR keeper, with the defence appealing in vain for offside.

Chichester looked more threatening going forward. But when QPR won a corner, it ended up with a tap-in to put the hosts 3-1 up.

Chichester are in action this Sunday in a friendly against the Army Reserves at Aldershot and are back in league action away to Pompey on October 25.

Three of the club’s girls’ teams were in action.

The under-15s lost 3-0 at Crawley Wasps, the under-13s lost 3-1 at home to Southtown – Lauren Collins was their scorer – and the under-11s won 3-1 in the league away to Horsham Sparrows to make it two wins out of two.

There were two goals for Charlie Davey and one for Aimee Pollard. They drew a development game afterwards 3-3, with a hat-trick for Charlie Davey.
