Ladies hit six in Sussex Cup ... Spurs get better of seconds

Sussex County Cup.

Goals by Lauren Ellis, Kally Ambler, Sian Payne, Becky Barron and Lauren Cheshire (2) clinched cup progress for defending holders City.

With a mix of first team and development squad players Chichester broke the deadlock after good combination play on the right between Harnett and Lauren Cheshire allowed the latter to cross for Lauren Ellis to tap int.

Kally Ambler forced a corner from which Emma Alexandre headed just over.

The home side struck the bar when a hopeful effort from striker Wheetley caught everyone by surprise.

It took less than five minutes in the second half for Chichester to put any thoughts of an upset to bed as first Ambler then Cheshire got on the scoresheet.

Ambler got on the end of a through-ball from midfield and scored with a low drive. Shortly after Cheshire’s angled strike from the right meant the tie was effectively over.

Chichester subs Greene and Symonds brought further problems to the Burgess Hill. Greene proved too strong for her marker but saw a 25-yard effort tipped over.

The next goal came on 70 minutes when Cheshire showed great innovation to turn in a cross from the left.

The fifth came when Sian Payne was put through and coolly slotted the ball in. There was just time for a sixth when Becky Barron convertedo a cross from the right.

Chichester are again in cup action at home to Leicester City on Sunday, November 9 (2pm).

City started well and were controlling the early exchanges. Abbey Shrubb and Amber Beaven were linking well up front but Tottenham defended well.

Tottenham broke on the counter-attack and miscommunication at the back led to a striker poking the ball past Hannah McNamara in Chichester’s goal.

Chichester were defending well though an injury to Shrubb on 30 minutes meant Rachel Towler coming up front – immediately she and Beaven posed a threat.

In the second half, Amy Bailey began getting on the ball in midfield. Zoe Hughes-Jones and Jemma Cottam-Verbruggen’s midfield partnership was starting to blossom.

Lucy Stanbridge and Beaven won the ball for Beaven to go round both centre-backs and loft the ball over Tottenham’s keeper with her left foot for a wonderful equaliser.

Tottenham started lumping it forward, where Chichester were winning it back. Beaven was on fire and Towler put her through again but this time her effort went just over the bar.

A long-range effort against the run of play from a Tottenham striker found the corner of the net for 2-1.

Chichester never gave up and Skye Gould set up Beaven and her shot went just wide. McNamara made a couple of great one-on-one saves to keep them in the game.

The officials slightly ruined a competitive game of top-flight ladies’ reserve football.
