The neighbours met in the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup second round and it proved to be a thrilling clash.

Lancing raced into a two-goal lead but were pegged back by the Mavericks.

With penalties forced, it was the travelling side who held their nerve and booked a third round spot.

Lancing caretaker boss Ash Bailey was pleased his side progressed and said: “We played really well in the first half but then conceded a sloppy goal again and then it was backs to the wall in the second half and they equalised.

“Credit to them, they made it really hard for us to play on a difficult pitch and battled well.

“I’m pleased to get through but annoyed we had to do it in extra-time for the second time in less than a month.

“But we’re in the draw and that’s the important thing.”

Josh Spinks put Lancing ahead when the ball flew through a crowded penalty area and went in off the Lancers centre-back after only three minutes.

Dave O’Callaghan and Ross Adams both went close to a second, while Josh Green saved well at the other end to keep out Wayne Joseph.

Adams ran through to slot home the second on 34 minutes but United responded on the stroke of half-time when Pat Rose slotted home at the near post after good work from Joseph.

Mavericks substitute Titus Paterson flashed an effort wide after good build up play and Joseph went close with a deflected free kick as the Mavericks were the better side in the second half.

Sam Blundell had a header well saved by Josh Green, but, with time running out, Ben Hall headed home a Lawrence Edwards corner on 85 minutes to force extra-time.

Lancers’ Richard Greenfield and George Fenton had the best efforts of the additional 30. Adams also twice went close but the two sides could not be separated and the tie went to penalties.

It was Lancers who held their nerve from the spot in a tense shoot-out, with skipper Naim Rouane crashing home the winning penalty.

United manager Nigel Geary said: “I was pleased with the fight-back and we were the better side in the second half but we conceded two very disappointing and soft goals to give ourselves an awful lot to do.

“We can’t keep starting slowly and it’s a shame to go out on penalties. I was pleased with many aspects of the match but disappointed with others.”
