Lancers defeated away to in-form Hailsham

LANCING Football Club suffered a 2-0 defeat away to an in-form Hailsham side on Tuesday evening.

The hosts sealed their eighth successive home win and fifth consecutive victory with a goal in each half.

A depleted Lancers also spurned the chance to ensure a nervy final 20 minutes for the hosts when Adam Hunt had a penalty saved.

Against a Lancing side who had beaten them 3-1 earlier in the season, Hailsham suffered a couple of early scares as Lancing started well.

But Danny Leach fired Hailsham ahead on 31 minutes from just inside the area as George Fenton tried to clear and the ball spooned back into the area.

Declan Lunn and Max Miller both had chances for Lancers but failed to convert.

Midway through the second half, Hailsham doubled their lead with a nice move as Jamie Salvidge exchanged passes with Leach, before crossing from the right for Stuart Skan to flick home his second goal in as many games.

Lancing piled on the pressure, as Lunn had a left-foot shot cleared off the line, while their best chance came from the spot with 22 minutes remaining.

Hailsham’s goalkeeper Benoit Benjean, however, made a fine save from Hunt’s spot-kick to deny the visitors.

Lancers boss Martin Gander said: “We played quite well and did have quite a few missing. Hailsham are on quite a good run and I think their confidence got them through.

“If we had scored the penalty we may well have come back like we did on Saturday, but we’re not quite firing on all cylinders at the moment.

“That was the sixth penalty we’ve had saved this season, so we have thrown away some points. We started the second half very well, but they went 2-0 up from what was their only shot of the second half.”
