But it ended in heartbreak as they lost the extra preliminary round tie to Phoenix Sports 11-10 on spot-kicks in front of a crowd of 204 at Culver Road.

Now new joint bosses Kane Louis and James Rhodes must look to put the disappointment behind as they bid for a winning start in the league.

As they begin a new bid to win promotion from the SCFL premier division to the Isthmian League, Lancing host Lingfield this Saturday then go to Hassocks next Tuesday.

The men from Culver Road led the premier table when football was suspended in the Covid-19 lockdown in March but were denied promotion by the decision to write off the campaign for many in the non-league pyramid.

Ben Connolly gave Lancing an eighth-minute lead against Phoenix in Tuesday night’s FA Cup tie but the visitors stormed into a 3-1 lead by the 25th minute. Mo Juwara made it 3-2 before the break and Connolly struck again three minutes from the end of the 90 to take it to penalties.

Connolly might even have snatched a dramatic 89th minute winner but he put it just wide.

At the end of an extraordinary shootout, Fin Yeomans-Daniel missed for the Lancers.
