Chichester City 1 Lancing 2

Southern Combination premier

A DRAMATIC late goal from Alex Bygraves denied Chichester the chance to put a halt to Lancing’s 100 per cent league record

The late action came at the end of a largely uneventful encounter in which both sides struggled to retain possession and relied on hitting each other with counter-attacks.

Luke Kilner’s strike was blocked by Lancing defender George Fenton, while Danny Byles fired a ball across the face of the goalmouth.

For Lancing, Lewis Finney twice forced saves from keeper Austin Holden.

Kilner went close from a free-kick with the contest beginning to open up.

The deadlock was finally broken on 67 minutes with an instinctive close-range striker from Lancers’ Alex Fair.

But City responded well and, with nine minutes remaining Tayler Hayes – a new signing from Wick – bundled the ball into the net after it had fallen to him from a ricochet inside the box.

However, right at the death, Lancing were awarded a free-kick and Bygraves thumped home a header to give his side a 2-1 victory and put them back on top of the league table.

CITY: Holden, Buckland, A Pearce, D Pearce, Hegarty, Atkinson, Hartley, Case, Wild, Kilner, Byles. Sub: Hayes.

With the cricket season having finished, striker Graham Bush, who spends the summer bowling for Bognor, made his first start of the campaign in a contest where the final score flattered the Bears.

Rob Godfrey gave them the lead after three minutes before Kieran Hartley quickly replied for City, striking from the edge of the box following a corner.

Heath took control with goals from Ollie Moore and Merv Bhujun (2) to put them 4-1 ahead at half-time.

Hartley claimed his second to bring City back into contention, but when Tiago Andrade made it 5-2 on 64 minutes it was effectively all over.
