Last gasp defeats for Rye & Sidley

Rye United and Sidley United were beaten last night (Tuesday) as a result of conceding injury time goals.

Seventh-placed Rye were edged out 1-0 at home to new Sussex County Football League Division One leaders Ringmer with Ryan Bradley scoring the only goal in the nick of time.

A disputed 96th minute penalty scored by Danny Leach sent Sidley to a 2-1 loss at home to Hailsham Town in the same division. Leach had earlier put Hailsham ahead with a deflected free kick in the 67th minute.

Kenny Pogue equalised eight minutes later having missed several opportunities before that, but the wind was taken out of Sidley’s sails by a controversial straight red card shown to Sam Willett for a foul on Craig Ottley.

Little Common provided some good news with a 3-1 victory at home to Seaford Town in Division Two, their second home victory in the space of four days.

Lewis Hole gave Common a half time lead with a fantastic finish for his 19th of the season, but Seaford levelled midway through the second half via a wonder strike from Andy Whittingham.

A Russell Eldridge free kick put Common back in front and Zack McEniry claimed the third, although the final touch may well have come off a Seaford defender.

In the same division, Westfield considered themselves unfortunate to be edged out 3-2 away to third-placed Eastbourne United AFC, ending their four-match unbeaten start to 2013.

Steve Ringwood and Mike Booth were on target for Westfield, who were undone by a brace from Liam Baitup and one from Gianluca Del Gaudio. See Friday’s Observers for full reports on each of these matches.
