Late goal agony for Rye

Rye United’s treble hopes were dashed in a dramatic finale last night (Wednesday).

United were beaten 1-0 by fellow Sussex County Football League title hopefuls Three Bridges in a John O’Hara League Cup semi-final at Crowborough Athletic FC.

The only goal came in the third minute of added time when Tim Rivers gave Rye goalkeeper Josh Pelling no chance with a spectacular acrobatic volley.

There was still time for Scott Ramsay to force a superb save out of Bridges stopper Simon Lehkyj, but it was Bridges who went through to a final against AFC Uckfield.

There had been few chances at either end prior to stoppage time as defences were very much on top, although Bridges did seem to have the edge in a tight contest.

The match was delayed by more than half-an-hour after the floodlights went out shortly before the scheduled 7.30pm kick-off time.
